Charleville Mansion, Shimla
The mansion is supposed to be haunted and many owners who have stayed here have soon left after experiencing something spooky. From Indian couples to Britishers, those who have stayed here had a story to tell about this mansion. It is said that one of the upper rooms is where the spooky activities took place and therefore it was kept locked most of the times.
GP Block, Meerut
A block with three buildings has been lying vacant since 1930s thanks to the haunted tales surrounding it. GP Block in Meerut is one of the most haunted places in the country with people claiming to spot a woman dressed in red sitting on the rooftop. They have also spotted four men sitting there at times or inside the house. Some people have tried finding answers to the mystery but so far no one has succeeded and the place is still vacant. Locals are divided about the truth of the place but there is nothing that is being done about it. The block even had caretakers at one point who stayed there for six months and did not experience anything strange. However, one day a lady spotted a woman in red and she freaked out and left the place.
The story of an abandoned village that still lies vacant, Kuldhara is in Jaisalmer and today is a tourist attraction. The village, however, is still uninhabited and people do not spend the night here as it is believed to be haunted. The story of Kuldhara is also a fascinating one. According to the legend, the Diwan of Jaisalmer Salim Singh who was known for his debauchery wanted to marry the village chief’s daughter. In order to make sure his wish is fulfilled, he told the villagers that he would levy heavy taxes on them if this did not happen. Fed up with his antics, the entire village fled Kuldhara without leaving a trace of where they went. But it is believed that their spirits still roam here and they cursed the village that no one will be able to stay in Kuldhara. Hence, it has been abandoned since two centuries.
Mehandipur Balaji Temple, Rajasthan
If you thought temples were the safest places to stay away from spirits wait till you hear the spooky story of Mehandipur Balaji Temple. Dedicated to Hanuman, it is a place where live exorcisms take place. People who are believed to be possessed are brought here and you will find them doing weird things like pouring boiling water on themselves or being beaten up by pundits. There are also some rules that every visitor who comes here must follow in order to keep the spirits happy. Taking anything back with you from here is prohibited including Prasad.
Mukesh Mills, Mumbai
Once a thriving cotton mill, today Mukesh Mills is mostly used for films and ad shoots. It is in a dilapidated condition after a fire destroyed it. The mills are believed to be haunted and even though actors come here to shoot, the crew seldom stays back post evening for the fear of getting possessed or upsetting the spirits. Bollywood actors who have shot here have also claimed to have some kind of spooky experience including Bipasha Basu and Varun Dhawan. According to one of the stories, a crew member got possessed by a spirit and started talking in a hoarse, manly voice asking people to leave the premises. Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad
Known for its majestic sets and film shoots, Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad is often visited by a number of people. However, the place is believed to be haunted even if the authorities deny this. Crew members can vouch that they have experienced weird things happening such as being pushed by an invisible force and injuring themselves. Some of the hotel rooms are also haunted as it is believed that the ground where this film city is built was where many soldiers lost their lives and their spirit still roams here.
Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai
Sanjay Gandhi National Park is both famous as well as infamous. From its rich flora and fauna, the national park attracts visitors from all over the country. However, it also has some species from the other world. Spirits roam in the forest at night and guides will tell you more stories about the same. The national park is believed to have a ghost of a woman in a sari that asks for the lift from people and then vanishes. It is believed that there were three kings who wanted to rule the village and in order to do so, one king invited the other two over for lunch but poisoned the food. The two kings died after eating this but the public came to know about this and was ready to lynch the third king. He ate the same food and died out of fear. They were buried close to the church and their spirits still roam here believe the villagers.
Vrindavan Society, Thane
One of the prime properties in Thane, Vrindavan Society opened in the ‘80s and has over 100 buildings. It is known for the spirit of a slapping ghost that roams here at night. A man committed suicide in his flat years ago but his spirit still roams in the society. It has slapped many guards and many have spotted him in their building too. The spirit refuses to leave even after so long. Even though the society is populated but such stories do the rounds even today. If you visit the society, ask the security guards for more stories about it.
Writer’s Building, Kolkata
Writers’ Building in Kolkata functions as an office space now but it was constructed in the 1700s for writers who worked in the East India Company. The building is believed to be haunted till date and those who work here do not stay in office after dusk. The fifth floor is believed to be where supernatural activity is higher than rest of the building. Writers’ Building is haunted because three revolutionaries stormed here and shot the general inspector colonel Simpson. His spirit still roams here and people have heard footsteps, laughter, and cries when no one is around. This is why no employee dares to stay back after office hours.
